Token Ruby: First Principles of AI and Claude Code Hot Takes

Hello there!

A lot is happening in the AI world. OpenAI released GPT-5, along with two open-source models: gpt-oss-20b and gpt-oss-120b.

I also wrote a recap of the recent SF AI Ruby Hackathon on my blog. If you’re into Ruby and AI, come join the SF Ruby Slack group and be part of the conversation.

And in case you missed it—this newsletter now lives on tokenruby.com, where you can browse all previous issues anytime.

Thoughts

I’m reading AI engineering book by Chip Huyen. It hits just the right level of detail—not the fluffy “prompt engineering vibes” coding hikes, and not the super-nerdy PhD-level machine learning either. It’s a great read if you want to learn how to leverage LLMs to build better products.

Shop

I love Kizik shoes (especially the Lima ones). They’re super comfortable.
I’ve recommended them so much to friends and family that they probably think I work there.
Even for quick chores, you can just slip them on instead of reaching for flip-flops.
The best part? They don’t look like typical laceless slip-ons—they look like regular sneakers.

Joke

Why do threads love summer?
Because they like hanging out in pools
